Tax Advisor Barry G. Fowler, EA, Shows Differences Between Taxpayer Mistakes and Outrageous Claims

Barry G. Fowler, EA, leading expert in tax resolution issues and CEO of Taxation Solutions, helps taxpayers understand the differences between honest mistakes and outrageous claims on tax returns.

Houston, TX – April 21, 2015 – Barry G. Fowler, CEO of Taxation Solutions, posted a new blog on the company website entitled “Common Mistakes and Outrageous Claims That Arouse Suspicion at the IRS.” With the recent individual tax return deadline having just passed, those who have requested an extension still have time to make decisions about their claims.

As Mr. Fowler acknowledges, “Making legitimate claims on your tax return is your inalienable right as a law abiding American. If you have real claims and real receipts to back them up, then it doesn’t matter if they seem aggressive or not. I encourage you to claim them.”

In addition, Fowler states, “Many people make claims that either immediately arouse suspicion or are plain ridiculous.” He adds, “Most of the ridiculous claims only go through when an individual does their own tax return. If you go through a professional tax preparer, the outrageous claims will not make it through to the IRS unless you are working with an unethical preparer who is looking to scam the IRS in your name.”

Fowler provides a list of some of the more common mistakes and a list of some of the more outrageous claims people have attempted. The list of mistakes includes misreporting income, claiming losses from hobby activities and putting an incorrect Social Security Number.

As Fowler states, “Understanding the differences between mistakes and outrageous claims is important. Some of the items from either list can be honest mistakes or misunderstandings. If you are consciously trying to cheat the IRS, though, repeatedly arousing suspicion may eventually lead to an audit.”
