Tax Expert and Advisor Barry G. Fowler, Has Tips for Recipients of IRS Audit Letters
Barry G. Fowler, EA, leading expert in tax resolution issues and CEO of Taxation Solutions understands how disconcerting it can be to receive an IRS audit letter and tells readers to first and foremost keep their cool.
Houston, TX – August 29, 2017 – Barry G. Fowler, CEO of Taxation Solutions, posted a new article on his website entitled “What To Do When You Get An IRS Audit Letter,” in which Mr. Fowler reveals that “summer is typically when the IRS sends out notices and audit letters.”
Fowler states, “So if you’ve received one, remember, first and foremost, don’t freak out. Don’t panic.” He continues adding, “After all, it’s just a piece of paper sent to you from the IRS. While the IRS can be scary, if you are a law-abiding taxpayer, I assure you even if you end up getting audited it’s not as scary as it seems.”
According to Fowler, “There are several things to know about who gets audited. If your income is between $25,000 and $100,000 per year, your chances of getting audited are pretty slim unless you or your tax preparer made glaring errors on your tax return.” “However,” says Fowler, “don’t think that just because your income is less than $25,000 that your odds of getting audited are lower. In fact, they are higher. This is because many taxpayers in this bracket claim the earned income tax credit and the IRS conducts many audits to ensure that the credit is not being claimed fraudulently.”
After controlling yourself not to push the panic button, Fowler offers a few other tips, the most important of which appears to be number 3: Don’t ignore the letter.
Fowler writes, “Even though the IRS is not excellent at communicating clearly, they are good about following up on their audits.” He suggests asking for help.
